Adi Nes is one of Israel’s most well-known photographers. He creates staged, large scale and multi-layered color photographs, executed with meticulous light and print qualities. His work draws inspiration from his personal biography, as well as from collective Israeli memory and universal art history. Although photographed years ago, the two canonic works exhibited here feel more relevant than ever: one featuring Israeli soldiers, and the other shot in a bomb shelter in Ofakim, near the Gaza border.

At first glance, Matan Ben Cnaan’s work “Bitter Moments of Grace” seems to have been painted following the monstrous events of October 7. Yet the work on this painting started well before and portrays the tragic story of Jewish boxer Victor Perez, who was shot dead while trying to distribute bread during the Death March out of Auschwitz. The atrocities of October 7 prompted Ben Cnaan to finish the painting. While depicting a catastrophe, this painting is also about altruism and heroism – values that strengthen the connection between this painting and our present moment. Ben Cnaan’s work has been exhibited at the Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery, London, among other institutions.

Broken Fingaz is a self-taught art collective founded in Haifa in 2001. Adee Ardon’s works are inspired by her use of pastels and the movement it creates. The work “Fields” depicts an Israeli landscape, most prominently associated with the kibbutz. By using vibrant colors and playing with perspectives, Ardon brings new life to this landscape, so ubiquitous in Israel. Following the attack on several kibbutzim on October 7, these colors remind the spectator of the potential and optimism at the core of the kibbutz way of life. Amit Berman’s paintings depict domestic, everyday moments, exploring intimacy infused with existential human insecurities. Berman’s process starts with his photography which acts as the initial inspiration for his paintings of contemporary queer life and identity. Although melancholia and loneliness are recurring themes in his oeuvre, Berman’s paintings use a bright, pastel color palette alongside playful and nostalgic motifs, thus creating a delicate balance between his subject matter and aesthetic approach. This tension generates a safe space that constantly shifts between desire and fear, romance, vulnerability, and loneliness.
